Sisters in my old congregation have been doing this for years! Years I say! Our old COBE's wife was an expert at it.

Could we use the new shunning guidelines to our advantage?
by Island Man inaccording to new, officially published guidelines, jws can now shun a person who has not been disfellowshipped from the congregation.
i see this guideline being abused by many jws who have an axe to grind with a fellow jw.
for example, let's say sister peinindiass rubs sister sensitive the wrong way.

I am very happy for you! It is nice to see stories like this to show how leaving this darned cult can be the best life possible. I can relate to where you talk about getting closer to non believing family members. Personally, I have formed some very close bonds with family that I never associated with before. Wish you the best! -

...the relief of Congregation Members
by Lostandfound injust clearing out all old stuff and came across tyhis line in my copy of the uk memorandum of constitution, passed by each uk cong in (i think) 1997).
this line bemused me as i know of no witness who ever receiver financial help from their congregation.
clause 4.2.4 read for other charitable purposes including the relief of congregation members who are in conditions of need hardship or distress.

Being a former account servant, I was privy to one occasion where the BOE gave a family some financial help from a Congregation account. If I remember right, it was like $2000 to help them with bills after the husband died suddenly without any insurance. He left a wife and 3 kids.
Here's the kicker. After a CO visit about 2 months later, the Elders where asking all the servants if they could help 'pay back Jehovah's things' so as to replace $2000 into the Congregation's account. I believe one of the Elders step down because of this.

When I went back to school in my late 30's I was asked to take a test to score my IQ. I think it was in the 130's. I personally never understood what your IQ had in relation to your intelligence. As was stated that Mensa is more like a social club, I never knew! I thought it was a place where the intelligent got together and plotted world domination.

how do most of you now feel about the military?
by sowhatnow inwas not sure where to post this, but i was curious, how do some of you now feel about the military?
would any of you let your children enlist, or would you yourselves join any military field?
how do you feel about the idea of women in the military?
-
Doctor Who
Personally, I couldn't ever join the military. I do see a use for it in this world though. I really can't accept the idea of killing someone. Just not in my nature. Self defense is one thing, but being your objective....no way! I also couldn't accept one of my children doing so. But, and this is a big but! I would respect that decision if they would chose to do so. After being in a high control group for so many years, I can't allow my own personal opinions to trump that of someone else.
As for women serving side by side with men in a combat zone? When bullets start whirling around your head, I don't see a difference if the person next to me is a woman, white, black, gay, Muslim....as long as they got my back, I am good...

Quality of JW teaching from elders
by sir82 inthere was a recent thread on the "quality" of converts to jws in recent years.
it wasn't a pretty picture, based on the thread contents.. well, the lack of depth isn't restricted to new converts.. in our clam this week, one of the principal points for review was this:.
ne 1:1; 2:1—why can we conclude that “the 20thyear” mentioned at nehemiah 1:1 and 2:1 is countedfrom the same starting point?

GB 2.0 implied answer to that question...."People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but *actually* from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint - it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly... time-y wimey... stuff."

The more I look back at my mom who died some 10 years ago, I think she was 'awake' to what was going on in the WT. She only wanted a simple service done at the funeral home for her family. We had pictures, played a video highlight clip of her life, and had some of her family say a few words. After which, I read Rev. 21:3,4 and talked briefly about our hope of seeing her again in Paradise. After that, we played "Life without End at Last" and I said a prayer. I was told by one of the 'friends' that attended that it was the most beautiful funeral discourse she had ever been to.
